Since i wrote the post entitled "New OP Policies" on January 10 2010, i guess my friends are confused asking why my discontentment to people in our chatroom.
So in this post I try to show as to explain the reasons of my decisions about new operator policies as some of my philosophy about chat.
The text is very big and maybe you won't have patience to read the full text.
Anyway I don't know how to reduce the text to some few words without lose the content.
Althought the text is very big i liked it because some details i wanted to say.
In this text I will show my ideas and thoughts about chat which came growing with my experience since when i joined chat on first time.
Firstly, i want remember to you the theme our chatroom is "talk to world friends".
However althought this theme, you won't talk to anyone in chat if you don't want to do it.
Nor I would interact with you using this blog if I never would write here.
In the same way I could never be your friend if I had never chat with you.
I don't know the reason do you join chat, but the reason I join chat it's just for relating with people.
Naturaly for me it's nice to be in a chatroom where other people want to have chat.
I feel uncomfortable in some other chatrooms where people want avoid this bothersome "obligation" of have chat to someone.
They don't want people joining there for disturbing their peace.
I'm trying imagine now what would you feel if you join some these chatrooms where people are silent there and even don't know each other.
Perhaps you will think the same than I: that chatroom is not a favorable place for making friends.
At least it was what i thought when i joined some chatrooms on my first days in Mindforge.
I joined some chatrooms more than one time where i tried talk to people but nobody answered me.
Then i thought: "here they don't like to have chat, at least with me". I just gone off from there for don't go back.
But i must say to you that also in our chatroom it happens many times.
Users join there but nobody answers them and they also think we don't want have chat.
Luckily we have some chat when a person have the initiative for greeting another one.
When nobody have that initiative to say some few words like "Hi, how are you?", nobody else will say anything.
The philosophy of our chatroom "talk to world friends" means to meet new people as have nice chat.
But many users think that we don't like to meet people in our chatroom.
It's because nobody talk to nobody there usually, although we use the word "talk" in the name our chatroom.
Now i want say to you some few words about our extra activities as reunions on saturdays, or writing in the blog.
I see these activities as needs, but not obligations for you. In fact nobody need to participate if he/she doesn't want to.
These activities are needs because they make an interacting.
With some time, if it would be possible, our chatroom could be a group where we know each other and where we feel well to stay there.
I'm not thinking to lock our chatroom for allowing friends only, and so forbidding other users.
No, it's not. Since the beginning, our chatroom is a open door for us so that we can meet new people every day.
However, users who idle (silent people) in the channel and doesn't talk to anyone may have strange intentions.
I don't know if you noticed that some channels don't allow users idling there and so these users are kicked.
On this moment i'm asking if some these users who idle in our channel could is a hacker...
Could some these users is someone who makes attacks to Mindforge IRC? Maybe, never know.
In doubt, better forget these people who idle in our chatroom, so to prefer people who talk with us.
You know, these who we know they just want have chat and meet friends.
When we interact with each other we get a better place. Reunions also help a little about interacting.
And I think we have got something like it.
People can come and go from our chatroom when they want and they are not obligated neither to have chat nor to participate any activity.
Nobody should feel obligated neither to write in the blog, nor to go to reunions, as people don't need to commit with us, as well.
But since our chatroom have new OP policies, only people interested with the channel will receive OP status.
It's reasonable that these people who likes to make new friends and so consider our chatroom is nice for it, these who take a position of helping the channel on their free time (joining chatroom at least 3 to 4 times every week, coming to Saturday reunion, participating of blog) and they think it's not an obligation but a pleasure for them, these people are prefered by me for giving to them some operator status.
Let me tell you now, some words about the new operator policies:
Normally operators are seen as people who represent a chatroom.
Then it makes sense our operators share the same philosophy of our chatroom.
The main goal of the new operator policies it's to have operators chatting with people in our chatroom.
It's not because you or anyone in our chatroom doesn't know how to talk. No, absolutely.
My friends have a nice talking. But our chatroom needs engaged operators.
The question is: "why someone needs to have an operator status?".
An idea which people usually have is that operators must say rules for users and care whether users are or are not obeying rules.
I think this is not a good idea for having a nice chat room, and one of the reasons is this what hydro told last post in his opinion about reunions:
... the human soul loves something, that thing is NO RESPONSABILITY IS BETTER.
In fact, neither users want responsabilities in chat listening rules, nor operators want to have responsability to keep observating users (for know whether they are or are not obeying rules).
If operators don't want to have responsabilities participating of reunions, still less they would want to have responsabilities for observing whether users are or are not obeying rules.
Unfortunatelly, people learned in other chatrooms that an operator is someone who kicks and bans users when he/she have any bad behaviour like quarreling or flooding.
In our chatroom this task is almost unnecessary. First, because we have not many users joining the chatroom on an only day.
Second, because the bot of the chatroom is efficient enough for kicking and banning users saying badwords or flooding.
So it makes sense that our operators need to be people who above all cares for keep working our chatroom, rather than kicking and banning users.
But what does mean keep alive and working our chatroom?
For me, keep working our chatroom means we want to continue having a place where we can meet world friends.
Keep working our chatroom means to have a place for meeting each other where operators from other chatrooms can't say us their rules.
above all keep working our channel means to keep our friendship.
And keep our friendship is essential regardless we have or have not an operator status.
Since I began in chat i knew enthusiastic operators who have got to keep a chatroom alive for moments.
However they stayed chatting in many different chatrooms on a same time and so they didn't repeat the enthusiasm to a single chatroom always.
Certain a greatest characteristic for a operator it's engagement.
And more important than engaged operators is to have great friendships.
I think arrived now the time to say you: only me is not enough for keep working our chatroom.
This is a strong reason which taken me to write the post "New OP Policies" on January 10 2010.
You don't need to do any thing for it. Nobody need to join a chat like a commitment.
I just wanted that our chatroom was a joyful place for you. I'm still trying to do it.
Would you want to make our chatroom a joyful place for someone else?
I hope you will understand any efforts in this way it's for having more fun.
